But as I think about it more while I'm riding, I wonder, how could I improve on this situation? If my bike truely were a sailboat I'd be raising the spinnaker. I know, I should have brought along one of my bigger jerseys, like the donut one. Crazy Glaze Donuts - You Wear What You Eat. I could wear it backwards so the zipper is in the back. I could unzip it the appropriate amount for the wind, and then the wind would blow in the open back, the front would fill up like a spinnaker, and I'd increase from 22 MPH to 27 MPH. Or I guess, from 20 knots to 25 knots. Yea, that's it. I'm totally doing that next time I ride down the Pacific Coast. For sure.

My bike is actuallya sailboat, I'm a mainsail
More than once on this trip I've been riding my bike and thinking, 'this is pretty easy and I'm going pretty fast, I must be getting to be quite a biking stud muffin.' And then I see the leaves and the weeds blowing and I realize it's the wind pushing me. And my contribution is that I remain wide enough to catch the wind like a mainsail. And my bike is really more like a sailboat than a bicycle. And I'm pretty much OK with that because it means less work for my legs.

I think that may be a central metaphor for how to live life: Just remain wide enough to catch the wind. Still pondering whether or not that works. . .In any event, it made me laugh!
