Much to our surprise, that wasn't necessary (nor was there any chance we would actually rise early). The sun was shining when we started, and stayed out all day. So we spent the day riding along the Mendecino coast in absolutely cloudless skies. When we lunched in Point Arena, they told us today was the first time they had seen sun in 10 days, so I guess we have nothing to complain about.
We rolled into Gualala, at the north end of Sea Ranch, at about 3:15. The balconey overlooks the river mouth and the ocean. I think I sat out on the deck, in the sun, for an hour and a half before getting up for a shower. The birds were feeding in the foreground in the river with the ocean in the background. Staring at the ocean, I saw a large splash which I mistakenly took for a whale spout. There were subsequent whale spouts there, but the spouts were much smaller. Then we saw a whale breach, and that duplicated the size of the splash I had originally seen. I saw one more breach about 5 minutes later, and lots of spouts. It was very cool. As an aside, it appears those whales move so slowly that we may pass them again tomorrow.
Then we had dinner at the new restuarant in Gualala, the Bones Roadhouse. Texas BBQ on the Northern California coast. I'm not sure who comes up with these ideas, but I hope this one works out. The pulled pork sandwich was excellent, they played BB King, and there's a stage for the live blues band. The place was busy, but maybe that's just because it's new. The only fault can find is that the Coconut Banana Cream Pie on the menu wasn't available. I think that was all one pie, but now I may never know. Fortunately I had that Andes Mint Cream Pie just last night and I think it will be at least Santa Barbara before I've worked that off.
