Oh, so that's what it's for

Although it was brilliantly sunny when we started the day out in Monterey, it ended up being another mostly foggy day on the Big Sur Coast. I told David the good thing about having all the foggy days here in California is that being close to home, we can easily come back if we want to retry the scenery. The logistics would be a lot tougher if we tried to redo portions of Washington or Oregon.

The fog was so low today that at many times we were riding above it on Highway 1. It was kinda like being in a jet above the clouds, except I had to do without the jet engines. The best part was right after the road repair section. They stop traffic for 10-15 minutes in both directions while the equipment works on a lanslide area. So after they let us through, we pulled over to let those cars past and then we got to ride for 15 minutes before the next batch came. That was nice biking. I regret not offering the flagman $100 if he would have held them for an hour.

We're spending the night in Lucia, one of the few housing choices here on the coast. It's one of those retro places with no TV, no phones, and no cell reception. In the armoire where the TV would go there is a flashlight. I figured that was a bad sign for the electrical reliability in this neck of the woods. David and I went to dinner around 7, the restuarant is a couple hundred feet down the road on Highway 1. When we got out an hour later, it became clear that the smart people probably had figured out in advance that the flashlight was to take to dinner so that you'd have some way of walking back through the pitch black. Apparently, I'm not amongst the smart people on this occasion. But we managed to make it back in one piece with no injuries.

Doesn't David have a flashlight app on his iPhone yet? One of the more useful apps I think....... Or maybe he didn't carry his phone to dinner (can't imagine)!
